The Culture Wars' New Front: U.S. History Classes in Texas Feedback

"You are to preach this religion," said the teacher. Child replies,"Well why? I dont understand." Who can say what religion is the right one for us? Who is to say, yes, that is the one and only religion you are allowed to be preached? What if that is how our life was to be seen as some one forcing us to be in a religion that maybe we just don't want to be preaching. Or even think that because of our natures disasters and our traggic happening in wars be God's judgment is he punishing us by losing peoples lives?
In the article" The Culture Wars' New Front: U.S. History Classes in Texs," by Stephanie Simon, says in one part that David Barton and Rev. Marshall who preaches that "Watergate, the Vietnam War, and Hurricane Katrina were God's judgments on sexual immorality." How do we know what God's judgments really are? We have no proof that God caused these traggic moments in history's life happen. Yet we do have proof with out thinking it was God's judgment. We know these facts when the last man is standing tell us all or for nature disasters from scientists by their technology. So there really isn't no logical reason that all this was God's judgment. Like as in Campbell Pendleton said, "History is written by the winners.: So for, the last person standing in the battle can tell us the expierences and the dreadfulness they felt and making a mark in history's life.
Also in this article it states that, "the curriculum should clearly present Christianity as an overall force of good." So is it to say that we should just not care and leave the other religions alone? Who is to say that we have to preach just one like everyone else? That is what makes people so unique that they are not like everyone else they chose other things than others. Isn't it why people came to America is for freedom of religion? That is what it says in the 1st Amendment "Freedom of speech, RELIGION, and press." We should focus on more than just one religion. How can this article make a statement about how Christianity is an overall force of good and make it seem like the other religion are just nothing like their bad or something. Yes the majority of religions are Christianity but why do we have to preach just one, doesn't make logical sense when we are all learning about one God but in different terms. People are to preach whatever religion they wish to preach maybe on eperson doesn't see the lesson taht was taught in school the right way it should be seen. Such as maybe the parents are teaching their kids something that is similar to what its taught in school in a different point of view. Then the child will be confused on who and what they should really believe in.
Overall this Christianity topic to be taught in class and how they think what God's judgments are its just obserd overall. Logically we we have the freedom of which realigion we want to preach because the 1st Amendment gave us that choice and we know how these traggic moments happened in the past because of our history books.

  1. Senorita Desi (or senora I don't really remember which it is).....So I think you did a really good job on your blog. I really like the little bit at the beginning with the student and teacher. Anyway, back to the point, after reading your blog a lot of your questions got me thinking. Like why should only one specific religion be preached instead of all the ones that makes a diverse country today? If Christianity was so important to history then the idea of a more religious history book should have been brought up years ago. I believe that if the problem of religion was not big for the first historians of the United States then it shouldn’t be on right now and history books should be left the way it is. Also, I really liked what you had to say about God's judgment and that whole bit. If the events that had been recorded was recorded as God's judgment, I want to se this man or woman who had a chance to sit down with God himself and interviewed him about why he started these tragic events like the VN War, Watergate, and etc... Where is this wonderful being at because apparently they are very luck to have such an amazing opportunity. So I guess I'm just trying to say it that I agree with you on the fact that there is NO proof that God had to d anything with these events so why should it be considered this way in a history book where trillions and trillions of kids will learn about it. All in all I really like what you had to say in your blog, so keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to the next one!! =]]

  2. Okay, first things first~ I really enjoyed reading this! Everything flowed well and you backed up your points and beliefs: all of which I completely agree with! I think that it seems ridiculous to show Christianity as the main religion, when others have had just as much of an impact on America. If one religion is going to be shown and all of the tens and hundreds of others ignored, we might as well just start raising everyone as a follower of Christianity. I can only imagine how a little kid in elementary school would feel if that were the case, being forced to read and comprehend a different religion than he/she did at home...[this is all assuming the books were completely re-written, of course~]
I look forward to reading more of your blogs~ :]]

  3. you made good argument. if these schools wish to teach so much religion, they should not only foucus on one, but all. no one religion should be favored because not everyone may agree with certain customs or beliefs. if anything religion should just be left out to prevent such bias arguments. you did good in your blog and i liked reading. i agree with you:)
